Venue: Committee Room 5, 3rd Floor, Training and Development Centre, Crowndale Centre, 218-220 Eversholt Street, NW1 1BD

Course and aims
The 3.5 hour session aims to introduce people to the underlying spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI), and then to build staffs’ confidence and competence to use a range of behaviour change tools and techniques to support behaviour change among clients.

Who is it for?
The course is designed for staff who have the opportunity to deliver brief interventions through having motivational conversations with their clients. Here we are dealing with conversational situations that last at least 10-15mins.

What will be covered?
The training will use a range of learning tools and resources to support engaging and interactive group. The session will cover 4 key elements:

  • Spirit and principles of MI. The underlying spirit and principles of MI will be explored, reflecting to what extent these principles are already evident in how participants currently approach their work.
  • Behaviour change theories and MI model framework. A selection of theories that help us understand the drivers of behaviour change will be introduced along with a basic model framework for a motivational conversation.
  • Behaviour change tools and techniques. Participants will be supplied with a Behaviour Change Toolkit. Each tool will be introduced, with some supported by video clips and interactive exercises.
  • Putting MI skills into practice. Using a simulation of a motivational conversation, participants will spot tools being used and reflect on opportunities within their practice. Role Play & Real Play exercises will be followed by an Action Leaning Set to share issues of concern to participants and support each other to overcome them.

Learning outcomes
After the course participants will be able to start using basic MI techniques designed to help strengthen a patient’s or client’s own confidence and motivation to address risky health behaviours, engage in healthier lifestyle choices and (where appropriate) connect with lifestyle intervention services available. They will also be expected to have made an initial plan for how they propose to implement these skills within their practice. Participants will receive a SMG certificate on successful completion of the session.
